Materials Science Research Horizons

Materials science includes those parts of chemistry and physics that deal with the properties of materials. It encompasses four classes of materials, the study of each of which may be considered a separate field: metals; ceramics; polymers and composites. Materials science is often referred to as materials science and engineering because it has many applications. Industrial applications of materials science include processing techniques (casting, rolling, welding, ion implantation, crystal growth, thin-film deposition, sintering, glassblowing, etc.), analytical techniques (electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, calorimetry, nuclear microscopy (HEFIB) etc.), materials design, and cost/benefit tradeoffs in industrial production of materials. This book presents new research directions in this rapid-growing field.

Residual Stress Effects on Fatigue and Fracture Testing and Incorporation of Results Into Design

Eleven peer-reviewed papers, written by experts in their field, provide an understanding of residual stresses, fatigue crack growth, fatigue lifetime predictions, and their effect on structural integrity. Residual stresses can be present due to processing and manufacturing of materials and structures, so it is imperative to understand how and why they can influence the test data that we used in structural design methodologies. Residual stresses may also be intentionally engineered into structures in attempts to improve fatigue life, and it is equally important that designers understand how to account for these potential effects on fatigue life.

Processes and Mechanisms of Welding Residual Stress and Distortion

- Steel ANSI/AWS D1.1-2004

Introduction to the Physical Metallurgy of Welding

Professor Easterling's book first, published in 1983, is widely regarded as the most important work on the subject. Of the many books dealing with welding, not one has denn devoted, as this book is, to the physical metallurgy, and the relationship between microstructure and properties of welds. For this second edition, Professor easterling has fully updated the text. In particular, the numerical analysis approach to weldability has been fully explored and explained. Not only will this book cover the requirements of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in departments of materials science and engineering, it will also continue to be a useful text for engineers concerned with welding problems in industry.

Welding Pipeline Handbook

Every day countless kilometres of steel pipelines are installed worldwide for the most varied civil and industrial uses. They form real networks comparable to a system of road networks, which, although not so obvious, are definitely much more intricate and carry fluids that have become essential for us. To comply with technical specifications and fulfil the necessary safety requisites, special materials and welding processes which have evolved with the sector have been developed in recent years. The main welding process used to install the pipelines is manual welding with coated electrode, which, thanks to its ease and versatility, is still the one most used.
